Summer camps for teens and tweens in Frisco (2027)

Many Frisco day camps stop at age 12, just when kids get choosier about how they spend the summer. These camps keep going into the teen years.

Updated Oct 26, 2026

Finding camp for a 13-year-old is harder than for an 8-year-old. Most general day camps end at 12, and teens want more say in what they do. The good news is that specialty camps fill the gap, and many of them go up to 17 or 18.

Music

  • School of Rock Frisco: teens join a band for the week, learn a set around a theme and play a public show on Friday. Ages 7 to 18, with a recording and production camp for ages 12 to 18. 9am–3pm (Fridays until 1pm), from $550 a week.
  • Bach to Rock McKinney: rock band, glee club, demo recording, beat making and recording arts camps for ages 7 and up (some 10 and up), up to 17. From $300 a week.

Theater and comedy

Art and writing

  • One River School Art Camps: a full menu of 6th–12th grade camps such as digital manga, 3D design, fashion and street art, by the morning or afternoon. From $290 a week.
  • Write On Creative Writing Camps: writing weeks for students entering 1st to 12th grade, half or full day. Half days from $235.
  • A Joyful Mess Art Camps in Prosper: tween and teen art weeks for incoming 5th to 8th graders. $325 for four days.

Counselor-in-training and volunteer roles

Too old for camp, but not ready to give up summer camp? Some camps run counselor-in-training (CIT) programs for older teens, and some take teen volunteers or hire junior counselors. It’s a good way to build experience, earn volunteer hours or land a first summer job.

We’re putting together a list of Frisco-area camps with CIT, volunteer and teen job openings, coming in early 2027. Run a camp that takes teen helpers? Tell us here and we’ll include it, free.

Tips for planning a teen summer

  1. Let them pick one big week. Teens are more likely to enjoy camp if they choose it. One intensive week, like a band, a show or a golf camp, can anchor the summer.
  2. Mix half days with other plans. A morning camp leaves the afternoon for a job, practice or time with friends.
  3. Ask about age groups. A 14-year-old in a camp for ages 6 to 14 may feel out of place unless the camp groups by age.
  4. Register early for the popular weeks. Small specialty camps have limited spots.

Common questions

At what age do most Frisco day camps stop?

Most general day camps, like the YMCA's and the City of Frisco's, end at age 12. After that, specialty camps take over. They focus on one interest, such as music, theater, art, sports or STEM.

Are there full-day camps for teens?

Yes, though fewer than for younger kids. School of Rock and Write On run until 3pm or later, NTPA's production camp runs 9am to 4pm for ages 9 to 14, and PGA Junior Golf has a full-day program for ages 12 to 17. Many teen camps are half day.

Do teen camps group older kids together?

Many do. Some camps split by age or grade, like the Heard Museum's Jr. Jobs camp for 13- to 16-year-olds and One River's 6th–12th grade art camps. Others mix ages, so ask how groups are formed if your teen doesn't want to be with much younger kids.

What about teens who've outgrown camp?

Half-day camps pair well with a summer job, volunteering or sports practice. Teens who love a subject often prefer an intensive week, like recording music or a full stage production, to a general day camp.
